Iherb product review: Childlife liquid calcium

Baby don't like milk . While we try to give him 500ml per day, he ends up having only 300+ml per day. The last we measured his height, it was only 10% precentile though his weight was 50% precentile. Hence, I decided to buy this supplement for him as a backup for days that his intake is only 300ml+.

I opened the Childlife Liquid Calcium bottle today and was a tat surprised to see that it is a thick creamy looking syrup that is orange flavour. I decided to dilute it a bit before feeding baby, around 1:1 proportion.

Good thing is that he loves it! Now at least I need not worry anymore that he is not having enough calcium though my priority would be to have him eat more high calcium natural foods.

Taxes when buying iherb from Singapore

A common question on GST ..

(Answer extracted from www.iherb.com today
  • There is a 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on all goods imported into Singapore.
  • GST is calculated based on the CIF value of the goods plus all duties payable. GST relief is granted on goods (excluding liquor and tobacco products) imported by post not exceeding SGD $400.
  • When the value exceeds SGD $400, the entire sum would be subject to GST.
In any case, if you want to pay only $4 flat shipping fee via Singpost to Singapore, then your value of purchase can't exceed $200 or 6.35kg. So if you keep to this threshold, you will not need to pay GST.

IHerb Product review - propolis (follow up)

I felt a sore throat coming again .. After a few nights without adequate sleep .. So I took a few drops of propolis again. For a few hours, it didn't seem like it was working much , so I decided to have a glass of Vitamin C for good measure. By evening, I was feeling much better. So this makes The fourth time propolis has worked for me.

I tried to also introduce this to my husband but as he was having a very severe sore throat with ulcers , I decided him to give him a high dosage of ten drops instead of three drops. Little did I know that he would break into cold sewage and also developed a swollen eye. So key learning, he might have some allergy to bee products which would get triggered if he takes concentrates like this.

Key learning: please test with only three to four drops at any one time and up dosage if sure you have no allergy. I still think it works but there are people out there with such allergy so be careful when using. And for good measure, do not use it on children.

$1 Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil Trial

I like going to iHerb every day to check out if there's any promotions. From time to time, there will be all these promotions where you can try a new product at very low rates. For instance, this is the promo I just saw:

http://www.iherb.com/ZOI-Research-Wild-Alaskan-Salmon-Oil-1-000-mg-30-Softgels/56098

Please note that this $1 pricing is only for first time purchase. Btw, if you are first time customer, receive $10 off 1st order of $40 & up, or $5 off on smaller orders, when using code: HQT301.

Anyway, recently, I walked into GNC to check out the Childlife products pricing and realised that it is much cheaper to buy from iHerb than to buy in Singapore even though GNC was already running a promo. Now I am even more convinced to buy from iHerb.

Product review - propolis

US$11.69

I have been working very long hours for the last three weeks, averaging 12-14 hours including quite a few hours on weekends. Didn't sleep much and hence,  immunity was low.

Before long, I felt the tingling of the throat  two Saturdays ago and decided to quickly apply three drops of propolis to water and drank it. By night, the sore throat had disappeared but I wasn't sure if if was all propolis' merit.

That night, I slept late again and it was overall very wakeful as baby woke up a few times too. So by Sunday, I felt the flu coming after sneezing a few times. Again, I added a few drops of propolis and miraculously the flu didn't quite hit.

Being quite skeptical, I was not sure if I could conclude if propolis was indeed so powerful. Last Saturday night, I again felt the flu coming and it felt like a big one was coming. Instead of popping the usual Panadol flu, I decided to take a leap of faith and use three drops of propolis on Sat evening and three more on Sunday. Surprisingly the flu didn't hit after all.

While three times can't count as any scientific evidence or statistically significant, I would say that I am quite sold. This is especially when I didn't apply the full dosage of what is recommended on the bottle - I just used three drops a day.

I will continue to test the propolis for effects whenever a sore throat or flu threatens.

P.s. I am no doctor so this represents my own views and experience. If you have any allergies to bees or honey products, this is probably not for you. Also, while some people take it regularly for prevention, I am only taking it as and when the need arises as I believe that too much of anything is not going to be good.

IHerb Product Review - Rainbow Light, Just Once, Women's One

I was never for taking vitamins. However, it all changed when I was pregnant and Doctor started me on calcium pills, fish oil and women's multivitamin. It became very obvious that my daily diet could not provide me with the minimum daily nutrition I require and for the sake of the baby, I decided to just persevere with the supplements on top of increasing my fruits and vegetable intake.

After pregnancy, sleep became a very scarce commodity and sometimes it's hard to keep the energy level up. And I was falling sick every now and then. As such, as of 5 days ago , I decided to start to take baby steps to improve my life and health.

1. Drink more water
On a normal day, I normally will have 1-2 coffee and perhaps 2-3 glasses of water plus soup at the end of the day. This is really below any acceptable threshold. Ideal is 2 litres but I am targetting to drink at least 1 litre every day to start with. It's a great detox tool.

2. Eat my supplements.
I am starting with Rainbow Light Multi Vitamin as it seems to contain everything that I need, and it's most of what we need in 1 pill. Great concept for a busy people. After taking for 5 days, I feel some differences ...

Pros
- I feel hungry every few hours. I suspect this is due to the increased metabolism due to the increased Vitamin B & C, and calcium (& water). And I think I am losing weight. (Yea!)
- As the pill  contains the chinese herb Dong Quai, I wonder if it has helped to alleviate the discomfort during menstruation.
- Digestion is smooth as there is probiotics contents.

Cons
- I feel even more dehydrated so I have to increase my intake of water.- Calcium contents still not enough to meet daily minimum value. A calcium add on may be required unless you take milk/ cheese or other natural sources.
- No DHA contents so still need to take fish oil supplements if natural food intake is not high enough.
